Many Gators (mainly "young, White "nouveau Gators") have questioned how I could say Tebow did not deserve to win the Heisman Trophy over Darren McFadden last season and I still stand by that assertion. If you remember, my reasoning was that he did too much by himself and in the process was largely responsible for the four biggest losses on our schedule in 2007. If you are going to give him credit for all of the wins, then he must take the blame for the losses (even though the young defense had a lot to do with losing as well).
This year, in doing less as far as stats, I feel Tim Tebow was robbed of the Heisman Trophy given his value to the Florida Gators, but just like me, I bet 99% of you could give a rat's butt about him not winning it and instead bringing home the SEC title and another National Championship. The Heisman being given to the best player in college football is about as dubious a phenomenon as giving Al Gore the Nobel Peace prize so to hell with it. It is championships that matter. And as long as we have the BcS, even that is subjective.
The following quote supports and sums up what I have been saying:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3825566
"...Tebow threw 32 touchdown passes in 2007, ran for 23 more scores and became the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy. He did less this season, but accomplished more by leading Florida to its second national title in three years."
The writer gets it. Tebow allowed his teammates to contribute and and spread the weight around. The result is another National Championship.
NOW Tim has accomplished his mission and done what a QB at Florida is required to do before being placed up in the Ring of Honor. I still cannot figure out why the name of the leading passer in Florida football history, Chris Leak has not had his name painted in the Swamp yet. Anyone else a little flabbergasted by that? Maybe it is because he does not have the power to turn Gatorade to wine?
Don't get me wrong, Tim Tebow is without question the best quarterback to play football at the University of Florida, but until he brought those rings home, he was just one of the top few. He got it done. He is the man. Move over Danny, Chris and Steve.
Now my beef. Why are sports writers allowed to say Tim Tebow has 2 national championships on his resume implying he was the starter, Chris Leak (2006 BCS MVP) did not exist in 2006 and we could not have won that title without him? Why is no one other than fans from other programs as on Rivals.com pointing this out? Let's get this straight folks. Tim Tebow was a glorified short yardage RB/FB on the 2006 National Championship team. A role that could have been filled by any good fullback (had we ever recruited one or had any remaining on the roster). And speaking of quarterbacks who were big and could run, former Gator QB and TE Cornelius Ingram would have arguably been just as effective if not more in those very same situations.
Tebow contributed but he certainly was not as needed as some make people think. That was Chris Leak's team and Urban Meyer almost screwed the whole national title run up in 2006. Thank God Chris Leak and our defense were able to overcome Meyer and Mullen that year.
So let's keep things in proper perspective and in their correct season. ONLY team effort can bring home a championship. When one player decides to do it himself? You lose to Georgia, LSU, Auburn and Michigan (only the 4 biggest games on our schedule that year). When you rely on the team, you accomplish more.
Now before any of you jump on my case about why I should not just be happy and enjoy the celebration? I am CERTAINLY celebrating, but college football season is over and we have to have some good arguments to sustain us during the dark months so.............
CONGRATULATIONS TIM TEBOW AND THE MIGHTY FLORIDA GATORS
2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!
